Renfield, Dracula's henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades, longs for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them.
"Renfield" is a horror-comedy film that tells the story of Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), the loyal and ambitious underling of Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Renfield is tired of his toxic relationship with his narcissistic boss and seeks a way out. As Dracula struggles to regain his full strength, Renfield seeks new bodies to feed his master. Along the way, he discovers a support group that helps him realize a different, happier life is possible for him.
The film mixes understated comedy with insanely graphic violence, as well as impressive makeup and visual effects. However, the supporting players and subplots don't live up to the central concept's promise, leaving the film feeling like a sketch concept stretched thin to feature length. Despite its flaws, "Renfield" offers a fun and unique take on classic horror tropes with entertaining performances from Cage and Hoult.
